HorsePower has been my saving grace this summer. After two failed internship placements because of COVID, I was on the hunt for an internship that would allow me to start in the summer so I could try to graduate on time. During my interview in May, I was told I got the position and that I would be starting in a little more than a month. I was so excited because this meant that I would be able to complete my internship while being outside learning more than what I needed for a basic Recreational Therapy internship. I also did not want to end up working in a hospital where I would be inside all day. I wanted to find something where I could be outside and learn nonclinical practices. The first week, I met my other intern that I would be working along side for the whole 14 weeks and we instantly clicked (I think it was the fact that we both knew nothing about horses that created that initial bond). That first week I’m sure we annoyed Emily and Mikayla to no end because we asked SO many questions, but we learned SO much. I absolutely love the environment I get to work in every day; especially having supervisors that are friendly and open makes me feel like part of the team. I remember the first day within the first hour they had us picking the stalls and I walked into Mojo’s stall and though, “Wow this horse is the size of a baby elephant!” He instantly became my favorite horse because he is such a gentle giant except when it's time to soak his foot in the mornings. (Then he becomes a solid statue that takes 5 people to move.) I can’t believe that just a month ago I started interning here; it feels like so long ago since my first day. I am so thankful for the staff to have allowed me this opportunity during a difficult time. I am also so happy to have met my fellow interns and volunteers that many I have created instant bonds with that will last a lifetime! This is why HorsePOWER means so much to me.
